December 29th 2008 - Goodbye 2008

Over the past, what is close to 365 days, I have gained so much knowledge, experience, wisdom, faith, dedication, commitment and enjoyment doing what I do. I had the pleasure to meet so many amazing people from all over and I was fortunate enough to be able to build a bond with the mast majority of them. Through photography, I was able to travel and see places I haven't seen, do things I haven't done and learn things I didn't know and I can't wait to see what 2009 will bring. I did more work with musicians this year than I have in the past and it was truly an experience. From doing 10 minute shoots before a show to traveling 10 hours in a day and shooting 8-9 hours of the same day to staying up for days straight living off Red Bull and left overs editing photos, I learned a lot about myself, my goals and my style.

I was blessed to work with the following artists and bands this year:
-A Kidnap In Color
-All Night Dynamite
-Aloretta
-American Diary
-Aniston (x2)
-Aside Oceans
-August
-A Verse Unsung
-Belson
-The Cab
-Conditions (x2)
-The Downtown Fiction (x2)
-Emmure
-Farewell
-Five Cent Wing
-Haste The Day
-The Hint
-Hot Vegas
-The Jealousy Game
-Jonathan Timber
-Mercy Mercedes
-The Morning Of
-MyChildren MyBride
-Relic Revival
-Wrecking Season
-Yearling

Thanks to so many people for your help, support and courage! There are simply too many people to list, but you know who you are!

I look forward to this new year and I know it is going to be an amazing journey!

December 12th 2008 - Work VS Life / Ready for '09!

Out of a 24 hour period yesterday, the weather had to decided to pour down rain during the small slot I had scheduled for a shoot. Of course I wake up and it is absolutely beautiful. Good thing for studio space and equipment, right?

My last couple of weeks have been extremely hectic and I have been really working on teaching myself how to handle all the ingredients of working hard. Trying to separate your work life with your personal life is hard when you take so much pride in what you do. Your work life becomes your personal life and your personal becomes your work. At some point, you have to know when to draw the line. Taking a certain amount of time each day to do certain things has helped a lot. For example, I may take one hour a day to do some online marketing and networking and take 30 minutes to watch the news. I have read many places and I am true believer that the average person needs to take a small break every 45 minutes because the human brain cannot fully concentrate on working, studying, reading etc. for much longer. I tend to work a little longer and take a slightly longer break in between. You have to find out for yourself what works best for you. Just remember that wearing yourself out will cost you a lot more in the end!

With 2009 making it's way around the corner and the economy still struggling, I have decided to do something I normally would not do. I am running specials for all my shoots in January. If you contact me before January and set the date, you will the special rate! Not too bad right? The only catch is that dates are filling up fast! Email or call me to get it set up.

December 1st 2008 - The SLR Mega Machines War Continues

Today Nikon officially announced the long rumored D3X. The 24.5 megapixel beast truly does not lay out much surprise for what, at least I thought, would offer. With a price tag tallying in at $7,999 you would think Nikon would throw us a little bit of a mind boggling surprise. The D3X, which happens to be nearly the same camera as the D3, with the exception of the megapixel difference (the D3 being 12.1 and the D3X being 24.5, for those who didn't know) seems to be priced extremely high for what you get considering you can pick up a Canon 5D Mark II (when you can actually get your hands on one) for $2,699 and get a the same features only on a smaller body and with HD video for much less! Come on Nikon. I am little disappointed. Nikon seemed to be very proud of the image quality of this camera and from all my readings thus far, it looks like the 5D Mark II is going to come out on top. Yeah, Canons ergonomics are poor in comparison, but I haven't had too much complaints on the 5D or any of the 1d bodies. We'll see what happens next...

In other news, I just got back from a relaxing Thanksgiving break. I finally got to visit with family and eat some really good food! I am currently working on new branding and brainstorming a lot of new ideas and innovations for 2009! It is definitely sneaking up on me. I hope to post a lot of new work in the next couple days and I have some really amazing shoots coming up that will have some awesome behind the scenes video footage and photos!

November 26th 2008 - Yearling Photo Contest + More

The guys in the Tragic Hero Records band, Yearling and myself are hosting a "Photo Caption Contest" right now! Last time I worked with them, we did some shots the night before in a girls bedroom with a pillow fight theme. It was a blast. The photos come out well for the conditions we were set up in. The room as real small and I had to actually take most of the photos from the hallway outside the room. It all worked out in the end.

Anyway, back to the topic of the contest. If you head over to their myspace you too can join in and win some sweet Yearling swag. All you have to do is think of your best caption that describes the photo and leave it in the comments of the picture! You can win Yearlings album, "The View From Here" released on Tragic Hero, a Yearling T-Shirt and signed poster of the photograph of them on the bench in the park I did!

Head over now because the contest ends DECEMBER 1st!

Yearling Photo Caption Contest!

I also just got back from Washington, DC again. I am beginning to become rather familiar with that area. I really enjoy that part of the country. So much history and the sense of being in the capitol of such a country is really awesome. I will have a lot of photos from both shoots up there as soon as they are public! So keep an eye, or two, open for those!

On a totally non-photographic subject, the new Volkswagen Passat CC is amazing!! I am a German made car man! I love my Passat that I own now and I will definitely be getting one of these once my lottery earnings are deposited in my account. Riiigggghttt.

The list of features that intrigue me can go on forever! I will name a few real quick.

3 Power Outlets
4MOTION®
12-way Power Driver Seat
Adaptive Front Lighting System
Brake Pad Wear Indicator
Fuel Pump Shut Off
Fully Galvanized Sheet Metal (As usual)
Heated Washer Nozzles
Multi Function Steering wheel
Navigation System with rearview camera
Rain-sensing wipers
Tire Pressure Monitoring System
Vented Front 4-Wheel Disc Brakes
...Just to name a few!

November 17th 2008

After my last quick trip to Greensboro, NC for a shoot, I really started to think about how important an assistant is no matter what the magnitude of a shoot is. I ended shooting solo and it was a pain. It may have been for a few different reasons. One being the comfort of having a trusted partner to help set up and tear down. On another hand, and more importantly to me, is having someone to be able to hold your lights and boxes when bags and battery packs don't do the trick. Being cold and windy this time of year, it is hard to be able to keep your boxes from twirling around if you are trying to snap some shots. Putting things up and together and taking them down is easy, it surely is a luxury, but I did for a long time myself and made it.

While my photography grows, I hope to grow and incorporate more hands at each shoot. With some of these larger shoots, it is 100% necessary to have help. With actual shoot times of 30 minutes, 20 minutes and maybe even less, it is so important to make sure you have everything ready and set exactly to your standards before your client walks in front of the camera.

My shoot in Greensboro was a little last minute for me and I scrambled around trying to get things ready and make sure the locations were secure and etc etc. Unfortunately, my right hand man couldn't make it and I ended doing it all and it was a lot harder than I remember. Most likely because I have collected a lot more lighting, modifiers, stands, booms and the rest of the nine yards.

So, for all you youngin's, like myself, as you grow as a photographer, do your best in picking out a good team of reliable individuals that share a passion just like yours!

In the next month or so, I will be launching a NEW BLOG and a lot of new material for everyone to enjoy. I am going to work my hardest to get some more behind the scenes action for you, in video of course!

November 12th 2008 - Breakin The Law!

While I was up in the D.C. area this past weekend, I did a shoot for a really awesome newish band who is already on the rise, The Downtown Fiction. Check them out when you get a chance.

We headed to Manassas to the national Battle Park. The band picked out the location and so we headed there and set up. It was a really beautiful Saturday and not too many people around. Right as I was starting to take some test shots, a off duty park ranger pulled up and, well, I will sum it up real quick; he asked us to leave. I talked to him a little bit and make my argument and he made his. My argument being that there were no signs anywhere on the premises and he argument that he ignorantly stated was as followed, "young man, there are no signs posted saying you can't kill someone, but that doesn't mean you can."

Unreal. So we got a ticket and we left.

Here is a quick video that Cameron of The Downtown Fiction took on his cell phone. It is short and most of the conversation is missing, but it is funny to see how pissed I was.

The shoot went well after that nonetheless!

The Yearling photos are done! I was stoked to see these printed and up in venues! You can check them out on their myspace as well.

NEW UPDATES TO BRETTARTHURPHOTO.COM!
Today I finally got around to updating some images on my website! It feels good. I will have a lot more coming soon and I finally added some material to my Behind The Scenes section of the site.

Today has been a great day! No electoral phone calls! This election was definitely one I will remember for a lifetime. Today in New York City, reporters said there wasn't ONE copy of The New York Times to be found. Yeah, its the day after the election and all, but you can you imagine the volume of printed newspapers! It is incredible. It is actually refreshing to hear that people actually care about the news and care enough to get out of their pj's and hit up a newsstand to get the paper.

I am looking forward to see what the next four years bring. This country needs a turn around more than ever and I hope we can do it!

In other, worrying, news today, Digital Railroad (drr.net) shut down. Over 1300 photographer and agencies were notified that their archived material and sites would go down in 24 hours. As we all already know about the Photoshelter pull-out, this worries me. On top of that, Getty bought Jupiterimages for $96 million and just last year there was talk about them Getty buying them for $400 million. I hope that within the next year or so, as the economy makes a comeback, that the industry will turn itself back around.

November 4th 2008

Election day. It is finally here and I can see and hear it now! No more calls from these ridiculous people haggling me about voting. A call here and there is fine, but I got an average of 8 phone calls to my cell phone from Monday of last week to yesterday! Come on people, I know who I am voting for and I have told them a million times!! Yeah, so go out and VOTE today! Your vote DOES count and it will make a difference!!

I finally finished edits from my last couple shoots and found some time to post to my blog. Which by the way I am very pleased with how many people have been stopping by to read my rambling! The Belson photos will be going public a few days along with the Yearling photos! I am happy with the outcome of each of those. I have been working on a few other projects that I will post and talk about soon!

Yesterday I got a package in the mail from WMG containing some pretty sweet postcards of The Cab who I shot awhile back. They printed out thousands of these cards. A total 5 different cards are available, one for each member of the band! My scanner was acting a little funny today so I only scanned a few, but I will scan the rest in tomorrow or the next day!

I am off to Washington DC and Baltimore this weekend for a couple shoots and I am super excited about both. I can't wait to get up there and have a good time shooting these two amazing bands! Wish me luck and safe travels!

October 23 2007

It is about that time. Time for SLEEP! If the lack of updates didn't give it away.. I have been overwhelmed with shoots, editing and life in general. I finally get a day to sleep in tomorrow! I am super excited! This past week has been amazing though.

I got the opportunity to work with an up and coming band from Raleigh, NC that I worked with when they first started, Belson. They are an amazing band. They have a new album coming out Nov. 4th. I think it is available on amazon.com and iTunes! So go check them out!

After a really long day of traveling to the coast of North Carolina to shoot, I had a day to edit. Yesterday, Tragic Hero Records band Yearling came in late Tuesday night to start shooting. We did one set that night/next morning and then we woke up and did a lot more shooting. It was really awesome too. They are working on their new record and I got to hear some demos and WOW, it's really amazing. I am super excited for it!

Check out Belson at their MySpace!

October 7 2008

The past week has been full of editing. I finished up the shoot from Virginia and I have been working a lot of really cool things for a new band about to make their debut. The two guys are former members of Runaway Orange, which was a really stellar band. You may have already seen one of the concepts I worked on for them. All Night Dynamite is their new name.

As most of you have already noticed, read, watched and drooled over the new Adobe Photoshop CS4, I think that this upgrade is going to be a real treat for everyone. The new 3D painting and composting will be a really neat feature to play with, but things I am more interested in are new features like the new masks panel, fluid canvas rotation, new adjustment panel and the enhanced workflow between LightRoom and Photoshop. The new masks panel will be great for quick edit masks. Being able to create editable pixel and vector based masks while being able to adjust for the mask density and feathering will improve time consumed in masking in previous versions. The fluid canvas rotation is pretty neat too. To be able to effortlessly move the canvas without distortion and being able to move it around to the appropriate angle is niiice! The adjustment panel is going to make life easier, simply put. Just click the tool you need and, POOF! there you have it to easily enhance color, tone, control presets and use of the new dynamic adjustment makes it all as easy as, POOF!

I am looking forward to playing with this a lot!

September 26

A couple amazing things are going on in the world of digital photography. When Nikon announced that their new d90 was going to be able to shoot video at 720p HD, it kinda struck me weird. I watched the Chase Jarvis video while he was out with his group doing the advance testing of this little beast and I was pretty impressed. I never really needed video capability in a DSLR, but after watching that, I started to reconsider my needs :). THEN, when the rumors of the 5D Mark II were brewing and I heard some insight about its video. Then I really became interested in what a DSLR can do with video. I watched the video that Vincent Laforet did and I was blown away! The amazing ability of it's 1080p H.264 live view movie mode for up to 12 minutes makes my whole body shake! I mean, come on, 25,600 ISO!?!?!? Insane.

Vincent Laforet is set to release RAW video clips of the film he did, Reverie today.

I have some serious thinking to do!

On another note, I have posted my first installment to my new project that I am working on, "Serve Us".

"Serve Us" is a project dedicated to those who serve us, our country, our families and loved ones. I started this project after I heard a woman debating about people such as cops, firefighters, armed forces personnel, etc. She stated that they should not risk their lives for others because it was selfish and put their own families in danger, if they passed away because of a fire, a shooting, war or any other unfortunate happenings.

I started with a firefighter from the City of Durham in North Carolina, Jeff.

I just got back from Virginia this weekend for a shoot with a new band out of the mountains. This town was ridiculous. They had NOTHING! Although, it somewhat reminded me of the town I went to college in. It was peaceful and everyone was polite, with the exception of some crazy lady at Burger King. It was the most excitement this town had probably seen in months! Out of nowhere, we hear the lady at the register screaming, "get out of my restaurant!! get out! get out!" and the lady being to cuss her out and she starts yelling back and then declares that this whole episode is over the lady at the register shorting her $10!! Which I am almost positive it was a mistake. The lady at the register begins to dial the number for the cops and informs the other lady she is calling the cops and the the crazy lady replies with, "go ahead, oh go ahead, i'm ready for them! i'll be waiting outside and i'll make sure this place shuts down". Then, she tells all of us that we should never give the register lady our money because she'll steal it! Haha. So, the lady goes outside and jumps in her car as fast as she can and leaves. It was rather entertaining. You probably had be there!

Anyway, here is a camera phone snapshot of the mountains we shot in!
mountains

It was beautiful up there. We shot from about 3-6 and the temperature probably dropped a good 20 degrees in that time. It was freezing by the time we left! I sometimes miss the mountains. Hopefully I will have a few more shoots in the mountains somewhere before winter so I can see the leaves change!

September 18

I really need to work on keeping up with this blog!

Yesterday was my shoot with HORSE the Band. Well, was supposed to be my shoot until we got rain that poured down for a good 2 or 3 hours and left my location nearly flooded. We waited it out and by the time it stopped, it was time for the guys to get ready for their show. While they played, I went out around Raleigh to find a place for us to shoot inside. Seems easy right? Well, Raleigh is one of those places that everything closes at 5 or 7pm. I was left with nothing and the fact they didn't finish until way late, we had to cancel. I am still extremely bummed out about this!

On a happier note, I am getting ready to purchase some new studio gear! I am trying to consolidate as much as I can. I've been shopping for a new source of power and I think I have fell in love with the Tronix Explorer XT
. A generator is just too large. I would rather have four of these guys and be able to put out 4800 watts rather than one huge generator running off gasoline and only puts out 2500 watts.

If you haven't already read/heard about the Jill Greenburg controversy, you should go read it. You can read about it over at PDNPulse.com.

I'm off to Virginia tomorrow for a shoot. Expect fun things!

August 19

Today was my shoot with The Cab (Fueled By Ramen). We shot on top of the venue, Greene Street Club, in Greensboro, NC. It was an amazing venue. We had a great time too. That venue was probably one of the nicest I've seen in awhile. The top of the venue was closed off for us to shoot and it was just incredible. For once there was no fans or idiots around to bother us. Everything went smooth until we had a small problem with the Pocket Wizards. We were using a household to radio cable and somehow between leaving Raleigh and arriving at the shoot, it went missing. Uh oh! We finally got everything figured out and found a way to rig one of the White Lightnings to fire about two minutes before the guys came up. Close call!

Here is a quick behind the scenes shot I took while some of the guys were redoing hair and clothes.

I just recently rebuilt my website. It is up now and I am really happy with it. You can check it out at www.BRETTARTHURPHOTO.COM.

In a few days I will be shooting The Cab for Fueled By Ramen. I am really excited about the shoot. Keep checking back for the photos!
